As Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “rules are not necessarily sacred, principles are”.
My work principles reflect my personal values.
Freedom
My most treasured value gave birth to the vision and purpose of Key Performance Consulting. I wish for my clients what I wish for myself, the freedom to find their purpose, choose their path, to be the best they can be and be happy with that. That’s where KEY comes in as I hope to play a part in unlocking people’s full potential; there is absolutely nothing that gives me greater satisfaction.
Courage
I often reflect on Winston Churchill’s statement, “Courage is not the absence of fear, it’ a decision we make that something is more important than the fear we are experiencing”. Above all else, we need courage in our kit bag on our journey toward realising our potential capability. Courage to step into the unknown, courage to take a risk, courage to take a fall, courage to stand alone, above all, courage to be ourselves and make our contribution without fear. I like to think I can help others to summon their courage as others have helped me.
Passion
If I can’t put my heart into it; I will take myself out of it — this is a commitment I offer you — passionate engagement. It’s true for all of us; it’s our emotional brain that supplies the motivation and energy to get things done and done well. A will always finds a way. Not coincidentally, emotional intelligence is proving a far better predictor of effectiveness than cognitive intelligence. Most especially for leaders, emotional connections deliver lasting rewards such as loyalty and commitment and release that discretionary effort. As the saying goes; they may not remember what you did or what you said but they will always remember how you made them feel.
Truth
Mahatma Gandhi’s hand guides me in this quest. He called it Satyagraha; it loosely translates to truth force, and proposes that there are different angles of vision that illuminate the same truth. So my work is to shine my light, for better or worse, for brighter or dimmer and just as importantly, not cast my shadow on other people’s light. This approach affords everybody the opportunity to bring their best to every situation without fear or favour and by working together in this way; we all contribute and create something new and better, something we could not have achieved apart. It’s pragmatic partnering instead of polite pandering.
Trust
With trust, everything becomes much simpler. When you trust yourself, you simply look inside for your answers. Trust your instincts, trust your dreams, we generally know more than we think you do. When there is a foundation of trust within relationships, you work together and you work it out. When a leader creates an environment of trust and lets go, work gets done, things are achieved. In organisations where there is trust, you will find far fewer rules and a much greater preparedness to take risks. Creativity comes from trust and through creativity comes growth. And you can hardly expect others to trust you, if it’s something you struggle to offer them.
Gratitude
I am forever grateful (and that is longer than you know) for those who made and shaped me. Thank you to my colleagues and clients who have invested and trusted in me. Ancora imparo – I am still learning – thanks to all of you!
